  • When feeling overwhelmed by tiredness and in need of real sleep help, Millpond’s ‘Teach Your Child to Sleep’ is a much welcomed, well researched resource. This is an easy read with a practical nurturing approach that walks you and your child through to a good night sleep.

Rozanne Hay, UK Representative and Director for Continuing Education IACSC International Association Of Child Sleep consultants
  • The Millpond approach is non-prescriptive and [their] book offers lots of choices for parents to match their own goals and parenting styles. I would heartily recommend it for anyone already experiencing problems with sleep or to set up good sleep habits proactively.

Melissa Hood, founder of The Parent Practice
  • This baby and child sleep guide is the perfect combination of accessible science, Mandy’s years of experience and a mother’s warmth. I love the way things fall into place with Mandy’s clear and thorough explanations!

Diana Hill, co founder of Essential Parent
  • Millpond’s brilliant blend of commonsense, encouragement and understanding – plus a highly logical strategy that is easy to implement – changed hell into heaven literally overnight. My entire family is thus indebted to Mandy and her team.

    Freya North, Author
  • I am a GP and would recommend Millpond to any sleep deprived parents; you cannot put a price on sleep. Thank you so much. I only wish I hadn’t waited 19 months.

    Vanessa, GP
  • We are so happy that we put our trust in you to help us with what has been a huge problem for our family for almost 2 years. We are finding time to relax and time for each other and I did not realise how much we missed this time.

    Ben
  • As a family, we were sleep deprived. The tailored plan for our son made it personal. I am really pleased with what we’ve achieved during the programme and I am thankful to Juliet and Millpond.

    Evrim.
  • We were at rock bottom. Our son has a neurological condition, so I was nervous and and wanted a sleep clinic who had experience of this and would adapt to the needs of our son. Our lives literally changed overnight!

    Shurron
  • Within weeks our son was waking only once a night. The investment we made into Millpond was one of the best we’ve ever made. It gave my son a solid night sleep and consistency. It gave me and my husband our sanity back.

    Shurron
  • I am delighted. I was aiming to go from 6+ wakes at night and feeding to sleep 100% of the time to 1-2 wake ups and some ability to self-settle. After doing the plan for less than 6 weeks my daughter started sleeping through the night.

    Katie
  • My daughter is now having quite a bit more than the average sleep for her age and it’s lovely to see her waking up naturally. I’m also waking up naturally and feeling much more refreshed for having a regular sleep routine myself!

    Louise
  • We are so happy we could jump for joy, we wish we had spoken to you ages ago. Using Millpond has built our confidence and made us feel on top of it at last. You really gave us some life back!

    Sarah
  • I live in Switzerland so it is really quite remarkable that Millpond was able to help me over the phone and by email. When you have slept you can deal with anything!!

    Melanie
  • We still can’t believe that such small changes have made such a difference to us and Alice. She has even slept through while on holiday in a travel cot.

    Louise
  • We are just so sorry we did not get in touch sooner as we went through 18 months of no sleep.

    Ann Marie
  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!! We never thought life could be improved so greatly. You showed us the light. Luka is much happier and loving his sleep now.!

    Diane
  • Alex is sleeping beautifully again and is now quite happy to lay in his cot singing until 7.30/745 am ( Godsend!) and sleeps very happily through the night again. Thank you so much!

    Sandy
  • Very happy to say that Joshua, who you helped us with, is now sleeping a regular 11 hours a night uninterrupted. In fact, getting him up some mornings is a real challenge!

    John
  • Mandy has been an absolute saviour at a time which was starting to feel quite bleak in terms of our little one’s sleep. The personalised advice and guidance has been invaluable.

Why do I need to know my child’s chronotype?

Knowing your chronotype will help you sleep better, and plan your day knowing when you perform at your best.

Larks tend to function well in the mornings, when owls are slowly coming round. Whereas owls come into their own come late in the day and evening times, when larks are ready to put their feet up.
As well as knowing how much sleep your child needs, identifying their chronotype means you will be able to establish a sleep pattern for them in line with their natural body clock. Work out which chronotype best describes you and your partner and use this as a basis for your child’s bedtime and waking time. By working with your child’s natural body clock they are more likely to fall asleep faster, have more and better-quality sleep and wake less at night.

Chronotype describes the time of day when you feel most alert or energetic – whether you are a morning lark or a night owl or somewhere between the two, often referred to a “third bird”.

If you prefer to go to bed early and wake early, you are a ‘morning type’ or ‘lark’. Or if a later bedtime and wake up time suits you better, you are an ‘evening type’, or ‘owl’.

Your chronotype is inherited from your parents, genetically determined in the same way as your eye colour and your natural sleep rhythm is passed on to you through the PER3 gene.
Larks make up roughly 40 per cent and owls 30 per cent of the population with the remainder coming somewhere in between.

What if… my toddler climbs out of his cot?

Start by lowering the mattress if you have not already done so. Remove objects such as teddy bears from the cot that your child could climb on and gain leverage to push themselves out. Try not to inadvertently reward them for climbing out, for example, by taking them into your bed. Be calm and firm. Try to catch them early. Quickly go into their room and firmly tell them not to climb out. If you do this consistently, they will probably get the idea and stay put. However if your child continues to climb out, it will be best and safest to transfer them to a bed. You may also decide to put a stair gate across their door to keep them safe if they decide to test out their new freedom and wander in the night and to childproof their bedroom, almost turning it into a large cot.

Ensure your baby has plenty of floor time in the day.

Teach them to lower themselves back down from a standing position by practising pulling-up and sitting-back-down games. When you are confident they can lower themselves safely, leave them standing for a short while you sit or lie by the cot. Occasionally tap the mattress and simply say ‘It’s sleepy time, lie down’. When they start to tire, quickly lay them down and say “well done for lying down” and then offer some positive feedback with some gentle stroking or patting. However if they spring straight back up continue to “ignore” this behaviour and to lie low by the cot patting the mattress. You may be doing this numerous times especially the first few nights. But with perseverance the habit of standing will gradually stop.
If your baby is happily standing and is content for you to leave them for a minute or two, you can come and go from the room, laying them down each time you return. You may have to repeat this numerous times, especially the first few nights.

What if… my baby keeps stands up in their cot?

This tends to happen towards the end of your baby’s first year as they become more mobile and are excited to try out their new-found skill....how amazing for your baby to go from sitting to standing!
But problems arise if your little one cannot lower themselves back down or if your baby quickly learns that each time they stand you appear by their side. Once resettled by you, they may get up again numerous times and this can become a game and a battle of wills that lasts until your child eventually falls asleep exhausted.

The most infamous example is putting a baby to sleep on their stomach, or "prone". While this does seem to help babies sleep more deeply, it also makes SIDS up to 13 times more likely. After campaigns around the world told parents to put babies to sleep on their backs, SIDS rates plummeted.

Why waking isn't bad
As frustrating as it can be for tired parents, there is another reason babies have evolved to arouse frequently: their own protection.

When it comes to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), one potentially risky stage of sleep for babies is deep sleep or "slow wave sleep". In this stage, babies can suddenly stop breathing. A healthy infant will rouse. But a baby with risk factors may not.

As babies get older, feeding around the clock becomes less common. By six months of age, many sleep researchers say that healthy, normal-weight babies don't "need" to feed at night, at least in terms of nutrition. (Lactation experts often disagree, pointing out that, left to their own devices, babies still wake to feed after six months of age.) But waking and needing a caregiver for other reasons is still common. This is especially true throughout their first year of life, when babies are most vulnerable and their nervous systems the most immature.

It is important to note that, while wakes may still be common among older babies and even toddlers, it's worth getting a medical assessment to rule out any health reasons for frequent, sustained waking, such as reflux or a tongue tie.

Sleeping through the night

All humans wake between sleep cycles. As adults, if we have our basic needs met (we don't need another blanket or to go to the toilet) and relaxed (who hasn't woken up worrying about a work presentation or an argument?), after we rouse slightly, we go right back to sleep. This is why most of us don't remember these arousals in the morning.

But adult sleep cycles tend to be longer, about 90 minutes. A baby's can be half that length. And, unlike adults, babies can't meet their own needs, so they often wake more fully.

The most obvious example is for feeding.
Newborns need a lot of energy to develop quickly after birth. They're also relatively helpless, requiring constant closeness to their caregiver. As a result, instead of being high-fat – which would satiate a baby and allow them to be left alone for longer periods – breast milk is high-sugar, which is digested quickly and requires more frequent feeds. Add to that the fact that newborns have tiny stomachs, holding just 20ml (0.7fl oz) at a time (around four teaspoons), and it's clear why they need to feed so frequently day and night.

Staying on schedule

The physiological functions that tell adults that night-time is for sleeping, such as melatonin excretion and a body temperature rhythm, don't start emerging until at least eight to eleven weeks of age in healthy, full-term babies. Exposing newborns to light during the day and to darkness at night can help get these systems going.

A number of studies have associated an earlier bedtime with outcomes like better academic performance and a lower risk of obesity for pre-schoolers and older children.

Just as adults differ in terms of their sleep - so do babies 👶🏼

It's likely that the relationship between sleep and development works together

Short-term randomised controlled trials have found that babies given a memory task did better when they napped and that fatigued infants had a harder time dealing with a stressful episode than alert infants (Something that will surprise exactly zero parents).

Babies up to three months old should obtain 14-17 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period, but that as few as 11 or as many as 19 hours might be appropriate.
