Toddler Climbing Out of Their Cot

What to Do if Your Toddler Starts Climbing Out of Their Cot

As your toddler grows and becomes more adventurous, it’s not uncommon for them to try climbing out of their cot. While this is a sign of their developing physical skills and curiosity, it can also pose safety risks and disrupt previously good sleep routines.

If you’re facing this challenge, here are some practical steps to help.

  • Start by lowering the mattress

If your toddler tries to climb out of their cot, the first thing to do is lower the mattress to its lowest setting. This will make it harder for them to gain the height needed to climb over the rails.

  • Remove any potential climbing aids

Take out items from the cot that your toddler could use to boost themselves up, such as teddy bears, pillows, or bumper pads. A bare cot minimises them finding a foothold to launch themselves from.

  • Avoid accidentally reinforcing the behaviour

Try not to accidentally reward this behaviour. For example, if they climb out and you bring them into your bed, they might see this as a fun reward and continue doing it. Consistency is key in teaching them that climbing out is not acceptable.

  • Stay calm and firm

If your little one attempts to climb out, address them quickly and consistently. Calmly but firmly tell them not to climb out. Repetition and consistency will help reinforce the message that climbing out is not allowed.

  • Consider a low-level bed

If, despite your efforts, your toddler repeats the behaviour and tries to climb out again, it’s time to transition them to a low-level bed to keep them safe.

See our blog on transitioning from a cot to a bed.

  • Introduce a stairgate and childproof your toddler’s bedroom

To keep your child safe if they start exploring at night, consider placing a stair gate at their bedroom door, effectively turning their room into a large cot. Additionally, childproof their bedroom by securing furniture to the walls, covering electrical sockets, and removing any potential hazards.

By following these steps, you can help ensure your toddler’s safety while managing their newfound climbing abilities. Remember, this phase is temporary, and with patience and consistency, you can guide your child towards safer sleep habits.
