Get your child’s sleep on track after the holidays

6103168_orig

The summer holidays are rapidly coming to an end, which could signal a few tears of sadness for some parents or for others a sigh of relief. But however we feel the start of the new term is almost upon us. So how do you get your children’s sleep back and track and avoid those morning meltdowns and hideous bedtimes come September?

We tell you how…….

Don’t leave it ‘til the last minute:

Two or three weeks before the new term date start to put your child to bed earlier by 15 minutes.

  • Repeat this new time for 2 to 3 days
  • At the same time wake them 15 minutes earlier every 2 to 3 days
  • Repeat this pattern until you reach the time that is right for their child’s morning start time.
  • Children should be falling asleep within 15 minutes – if it’s taking much longer just slow down the changes and move bedtime 15 minutes earlier weekly rather than every 3 days.

The morning is just as important:

  • Morning is when we reset our body clock so it’s very important children are woken at the same time each day. A big dose of light will help to get your child up and running, so open the curtains straightaway. Light suppresses melatonin – the hormone that makes us feel sleepy.

If having done all of these things you are having problems with your child’s sleep please get in touch.
You can speak to one of our sleep therapists today for a free sleep assessment.

5 month old Harvey was waking every 2 hours

Harvey was waking every 2 hours

Flavia’s Story:

Before starting to work with Millpond, 5 month old Harvey would not settle to sleep on his own.  He was waking every 2 hours in the night time and would only go back to sleep by being breastfed.  In the day time the main solution to get him to sleep was taking him for walks in his pram or carrying him in the baby carrier, which can be quite heavy after a while. After speaking to Millpond we were full of hope that our little Harvey will learn how to fall asleep on his own without resorting to the “cry it out” technique and our dreams came true.

Harvey took really fast to the new way of getting him to sleep and it felt like a really gentle approach. We had a few nights when Harvey cried a little but the experience was a pleasant one and now Harvey knows how fall asleep on his own, life is definitely much easier now.

Thank you Millpond, thank you Juliet!!

Grace’s sleep problems started when she was 4 months old.

Grace is our second baby. We were blessed with an excellent sleeper the first time round so we didn’t expect things to be different this time. From the age of 4 months, Grace started waking up every three hours (if we were lucky) wanting milk or simply wanting to play. I was very frustrated, exhausted, weepy and depressed. I was resentful towards Grace and hearing stories of other parents bragging about their angel babies only made me feel worse. I knew I needed a solution and when I asked around for some recommendations for baby sleep trainers, Millpond was suggested very enthusiastically by a friend of a friend.I was worried that the programme would clash with looking after an older sibling but it didn’t at all. In the end, just a couple of simple tweaks to my routine and some reassurance from Juliet on what the baby needed in terms of food, changed the situation drastically. In about 4 weeks Grace started sleeping through the night and she’s doing from 19:00 to 7:00. I love the feeling of going to bed knowing that I can rely on a full night of uninterrupted sleep! We feel so confident now that we have moved Grace in the same room as her sister and they both sleep peacefully until the morning. There are no words to describe how grateful I am to Juliet.

Kate was feeling a little demented with such interrupted sleep and the pressure of starting a new business venture. She tells her story…..

fairy copy

“My son had been a great sleeper from about 7 weeks old.  Right after Christmas when I started a new business venture, he started getting out of bed in the night – at the worst point on the hour every hour – as well as being a little more difficult to settle.   I am a 7 hours straight through sleeper.  To say I thought I was losing my mind is an understatement, made doubly hard because he didn’t seem to need anything or be upset when he woke, just wanted to check I was there!

Millpond’s techniques are subtle but very effective and Juliet was so thoughtful and understanding.  My son responded very well to 3rd party challenges from the sleep fairy and loved her little notes and treats every day.  Things didn’t turn around immediately but we persevered and (tried) to always remain calm (the keys!).  Towards the end of our consultation period we went on holiday and Mack was getting up once in the night with various little needs (the loo/bedclothes/loo…) but making sure we didn’t give too much attention and heading straight back to bed, he is now back to his old ways of sleeping right through until morning!

Thank you Millpond!”
